Phoenix officials travel to Taiwan as they plan $7 billion science park in Arizona

A delegation of Phoenix leaders has traveled to Taiwan to pitch Arizona as an ideal state for expansion opportunities as they work on plans to develop a science and technology park in Arizona.
The trip was held July 21-26 and included representatives from the City of Phoenix, Arizona Commerce Authority and Greater Phoenix Economic Council, as well as businesses such as Mack Real Estate Group and McCourt Partners.
Mack Real Estate and McCourt are planning to develop the $7 billion science and technology park around Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. in north Phoenix, drawing inspiration from existing centers such as the Hsinchu Science Park in Taiwan.

Lucid begins pre-production of electric Gravity SUV in Casa Grande

Company says new vehicle will sell for about $80K, aimed at competition with Tesla
Lucid Group Inc. said it is beginning pre-production of its Gravity electric crossover SUV at its Casa Grande manufacturing facility, marking a “significant milestone” for the company. Lucid CEO Peter Rawlinson on Tuesday posted a video on LinkedIn of the first Lucid Gravity SUV bodyshell descending from a roof conveyor to the company’s main production line at its 3-million-square-foot Casa Grande factory, which underwent an expansion in January.

“This marks the beginning of the Lucid Gravity pre-production run on our assembly line,” Rawlinson wrote on LinkedIn.” Each unit will help us perfect the process and will be used for final validation testing to ensure top-tier build quality in full-scale production.”

Amazon announces 500 new jobs in Goodyear

Amazon.com Inc. has confirmed plans to open a new fulfillment center in Goodyear and hire 500 workers. Seattle-based retail giant Amazon (Nasdaq: AMZN) signed on for the full 1.2 million square-foot warehouse at the Prologis 303 Business Park in April, as the Phoenix Business Journal previously reported. This was Amazon's third industrial lease signed in 2024 — it leased up two other buildings each totaling at least 1 million square feet in Buckeye and in Glendale, bringing its total new leases this year to 3.5 million square feet.

Amazon officials initially declined to comment on its Goodyear facility in April but said July 24 that the company is focused on growing in the West Valley suburb. Its new facility is located near the southwest corner of Cotton Lane and Camelback Road near the Loop 303.

Phoenix Business Journal unveils 2024 Small Business Awards finalists

The Phoenix Business Journal has unveiled the finalists for the sixth-annual Small Business Awards recognizing excellence in small businesses in three size categories of micro, small and midsize companies. The event is presented by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona. The supporting sponsor is Salt River Project.
Sixteen finalists were selected from a pool of 55 by a panel of judges based on various criteria including revenue growth, contributions to their industry, vision for the future, and their potential to influence the local business community. 
Three winners, one from each category, will be announced during the 2024 Small Business Awards ceremony, 4-6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 12 at the Culinary Dropout in Tempe. Register for the event here.
